About Me

Hi there! My name is Suzanne Ryan, and I have been on the Ketogenic Diet since January 13th, 2015. I have been overweight most of my life, after failing at so many different methods to lose weight, I found keto and it has completely changed my life. I’m here to share my journey, encourage others, and share tips and recipes! I also have a YouTube channel and I post weight loss updates, recipes, reviews, grocery hauls, and other keto related content. Also, check out my first book, Simply Keto, which will guide you through the ins and out of keto with helpful tips on getting started and finding your own personal success. Simply Keto also has over 100 easy, real-life low carb recipes!

When I first started keto I weighed 289 pounds, my energy level and self-esteem were both at an all-time low. I felt tired and sick a lot of the time, thankfully the ketogenic diet has turned my life around. After being ketogenic for one year I was able to naturally lose 100 lbs! I’m currently down 121 lbs, and I couldn’t be happier with this lifestyle!

I wondered what you mean by Keto “karma?”
Do you believe in Hindu karma?

Karma has two tie ins for me. One is they use Karma as a “thumbs up” on Reddit, which is where I discovered keto. The other meaning to me is more classic, put good in and get good out. With nutrition, I see food as medicine, and if you put good food in, you get good out in the form of health, energy, and mental clarity and more!

          Hey Suzanne,

My wife and I just started Keto two days ago. We bought your cookbook, Simply Keto and are enjoying reading through it. I will prepare my first recipe from your book for tonight’s 6 PM dinner. We are doing this on a 2MAD (2 meals a day) plan. I am 66, 190lbs and want to drop to mid 150’s. My wife would like to drop 20 lbs. She is 60 years old. Do you know any one our age who began Keto?

          Thanks,
          Kevin

Kevin, my mum is 68 and started doing keto a few months back to help with her type 2 diabetes. She has had T2D for years and was on all sorts of medication and insulin for it – since eating LCHF she is off all her meds and getting excellent blood sugar readings, plus has lost around 70lbs!

I came across your you tube channel when researching the Keto diet. So inspired by your weight loss. I have a 4 year old daughter and have really struggled with losing weight since she was born. I have started the Keto diet and look forward to seeing what is to come. I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks. I think that was all just water weight. But I am sticking to it, I started to see a little more loss this week. I just watched the Cauliflower pizza video, can’t wait to give it a try.

I am 66 and needed to lose 70. I lost 20 the first 5 weeks and hit a plateau. I hope the losses start back up. I am not sure i do it correctly; am still reading and watching videos and learning.

Thank you so much! Plateaus do happen….Just stick with it and play around with your macros! Most people say that things like artificial sugar, nuts or nut butters, or too much protein cause them to stall. Try to cut back on one or all of those things and see if that helps! Sometimes our bodies just take breaks, so keep calm and keto on!

SO TRUE! I used to wonder why I was so exhausted after work every day, and I even ate comfort food at night in an effort to try to feel better. After limiting carb intake (shooting for 20 grams, ending up between 20-50), I immediately noticed I had much more energy. The theory was confirmed on an off day I ate noodles and pizza — tired and feeling heavy again that same day. With low-carb, I don’t feel deprived because I can still do things like no-bun burgers with a slice of cheese and a spoon of mayo. In the past, the only way I ever lost weight was not eating foods considered “carbs” while severely limiting calorie intake. If I didn’t starve, I still gained weight while not eating “carbs.” Now, reading nutrition labels and counting *grams* of carbs changed my life — it turns out I was eating and drinking tons of carbs without knowing it, and now that I’m not doing that, I lose weight WITHOUT starving. When I tell you that nothing else has worked to lose weight, know that I tried things like long-term weight-training and high intensity cardio, numerous nutritionists, personal trainers, and even CoolSculpt!

I’ve just come across your blog – you are an amazing inspiration! I started Keto one month ago and have only lost 1kg. I’m under 25g net carbs daily and eating between 1500-1700/day (depending on exercise). I’m following my macros diligently, but no incredible weight loss just yet -but I am feeling MUCH less swollen and have loads more energy. I started at 78.5kg/174cm/36 yrs female. If you or anyone has any suggestions or ideas on why I’m not losing, I’d love hear them! Or comments on my MFP logs (sibernstein). Have a great weekend! Sarah

Like others, came across them researching all Keto info is out there… It is my first week even thou i have a long history of dieting and more/ less succesfull weight loss.

I really liked trader joes videos but was surprised to see NO avocados on ur list? Probably the matter of personal preference? I think for those who cant chow down fatty steak or try to stay away from dairy due to intolerance, adding 1-2 or substituting fatty meat for avocados and olives as well as nuts, Trader joes has fair price on some excellent avocados ( which can be hit or miss at other markets).
You are wonderful inspiration !! Keep up this excellent work!! All the best to you!

I usually buy avocados one by one from my grocery store…Trader joes often sells the bags and I prefer to stage them with the level that they are ripe so that they aren’t all ripe at the same time.

    Hi Suzanne,

Reading your story and your gracious responses to each of your comments, I feel like I’ve found a beacon of light 🙂 much love from across the seas! Been LCHF in a whole grains, lots of produce and nuts kind of way for three years now. Have reversed most health conditions and dropped 4 pant sizes in 3 years. But having spent two hours on your site/YouTube channel, I now feel that size 6 is maybe just a few months away. Never thought that possible. Not in this lifetime.

Day 4 on keto, and more committed than ever, thanks to you. Stay blessed. Wishing you only good things. Thank you for being 🙂 <3

    Hi Suzanne!

You’ve been a great inspiration and I appreciate all of the work you do to share your journey with the rest of us. I am about 4 weeks in to this WOL and feeling amazing. My starting weight and my height are almost exactly what yours are and it’s nice to see another tall chick’s story! I have been reading so much interesting information and I often come across the notion of fasting to various degrees. I naturally started 18/6 fasting by not eating after 7pm or until lunch at 1pm on at least the 5 work days of the week. I have heard of incredible benefits to fasting, assuming it’s done properly and only when your body is truly ready. Did you or do you fast at all? Thanks again

    Hi Suzanne
You’re an inspiration. I have been on Keto since February 2017. Whilst I initially lost 10kgs (20 lbs or there abouts), I haven’t been able to shift any more.
I was wondering if you had a coach? I need someone to advise me and help me lose the extra 20 kgs (40 lbs) I’m carrying.
    Thanks in advance.

I remember following you on youtube when I started keto back in April of 2015 and you seriously look so different now. I remember watching your weekly weigh in and it motivated me. I stop keto for a year when I move to US but I restarted again and been on it for a week now. I’m so happy for you! <3

I guess I’m late to the party, but happy I found your site! I started keto on 8/24/17. I also want to lose about 120 pounds. I think I’m doing pretty well, but will only weigh myself at most once a month. What were the macros you used for your loss? And are the keto strips helpful? If so, what should I be shooting for? Sorry, this is the first place I found that I feel like I can ask questions! And your weight loss is amazing!!!

Hey there. Each persons macros will be different, but to learn how to set that up click on the menu at the top of my blog that says FAQ’s and select How to: Getting starting on the ketogenic diet. This post will walk you through each step. Keto strips generally aren’t recommended due to the fact that they aren’t very accurate, and get even less accurate as you become keto adapted. Checking your blood ketones is a great and easy way if you do have the desire to check. The meter I use in linked under my keto essentials page. Don’t feel like you have to check right away though, I didn’t start monitoring my ketones until several months in. If you find it helpful then go for it, otherwise just focus on keeping your macros on point and go from there!

So happy I found your site.

    Congrats! Well done.

Now I have a question which you may have addressed some place on your blog but I just arrived. Did you have any surgery after weight loss?

I want to start keto next week to see if it will help my new health issue and I would like to drop the excess weight the meds have caused me to gain when I was misdiagnosed.

Look forward to reading more of your blog.

I definitely feel sooo much better but have a lot of weight to loose and finding it hard to stick to when I’m not seeing results… my ketones are mod-large on any given day and I’m tracking macros….not sure what else to do…. any advice would be appreciated and so helpful to keep me on this much needed journey!

    Hello Suzanne,

I saw you on Megan Kelly today and felt like you were speaking for me. I have experienced what you have shared about the thought of food and have tried every diet out there. My friend who is a trainer is a keto believer but thought it may only work well for men until I saw your story. I am starting this today and going to buy your book. I appreciate you sharing your story! I cant wait to journal my own story. I am also going to get my sister on this as we both struggle with losing weight. Being over 40 has additional challenges but I am very excited about the outcomes you have had and hope to have the same!

    Hello –
Towards the end of 2017, I was trying to rev myself up yet again to try another weight loss plan, so I was reviewing my past journals and food journals to see if anything had ever really worked. I am 55 years old, 290 pounds and not living the way I want, so the answer was clear – all the diets I ever tried managed to reduce my joy in life more than my weight. Looking back, the only one that ever approached helpfulness was Atkins, so I began to research how other people have made that low carb lifestyle work…and came across your ketokarma website among others, and decided to give Keto a try. The thing that always pushed me off diets before was that carb obsession never went away…the idea that additional healthy fats would quiet that obsession was like a lightning strike – and I started Keto on 12/30/17.

So, with a cleaned out kitchen, your book, Simply Keto, and the videos, advice and info from the internet, I am doing this. I know from experience what not to do, and I am managing to avoid the pitfalls and maintain inspiration. Just know, you’re helping so much with that last part.

I know this is long, so last thing- I watched your Today appearance and was happy you could maintain your balance against the negativity. It is utterly amazing how the default fear-mongering starts when people say they are having success with LC or LCHF! I can withstand those voices because even doing one week of this, I feel good, less physical pain, calm and certain I finally have the means to do what I need to do.

    Keep doing what you do!

OK-this is it. I hit the humdinger of 300 lbs this week. That was a milestone I never wanted to see. Years ago I did low carb, mostly Atkins and lost a ton of weight. Then I found out I was pregnant with baby #4 and had to stop having all of the artificial sugars. It was my skinniest pregnancy, that part I enjoyed. But slowly the weight crept back up. Then after surprise baby #5, I lost hope. I have slowly let my weight climb since then. Now, baby #4 is 14 and I want to be around to see my grandchildren and great grandchildren someday, so this has to end. I turn 40 next month and I don’t want to be 300lbs for one more day.
After a cousin mentioned on FB how they were SO EXCITED to have FINALLY gotten ahold of a copy of your book(congrats on that by the way) I started looking up the book, ordered it, and then looked up your story. I am very happy for your new lifestyle and all of the joy and relief it has brought to your everyday life. I want that. I want to walk up my stairs to my bedroom without huffing, to be able to tie my shoes without sitting down and contorting my body, and to live a long healthy life. Today is the beginning of the rest of my life. Today is the fattest I will ever be and I don’t want to look back.
I thought I might find some recipes or other info in the book as I thumbed through, but eventually realized I couldn’t put it down. You are relatable and real, and I love it. Your before picture is so much like my now(soon to be before picture0 that I am truly motivated and inspired. Thank you for sharing your wealth and knowledge and for letting us in on your journey.
Enjoy that little one, even when you’re so exhausted and the house is a mess. I heard that so much when my 5 were little, but now that I have 5 teenagers, I wish I would have listened to it a little more.I look forward to holding myself accountable by messaging you one day to tell you I reached my goal, or just that I feel good.
I will be praying for you and your family as you continue this fabulous lifestyle.

You look amazing. You are beautiful! 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing your story and experience. Both my mother and I are on keto now (we started 2 months ago), She has lost 12 lb and I have lost about 10. I was becoming precariously close to being pre-diabetic and had to make a change. I had been on tons of fasts and 5:2 and Mayo clinic diets, blah blah blah. Honestly Keto is pretty close to Somersizing which I lost 10 lb in 2 1/2 weeks on (but 20 years ago!). This way of eating (keto) seems to suit me and I find it easier to follow than anything. My only downfall is wine and alcohol but I usually stay within my macros regardless. Last night I had a low carb (cream cheese/cheese/egg) pizza crust with Rao’s sauce and cheese and pepperoni (uncured) and my sugar was back up to 104 mg/d/L this morning. Not good. I have been staying consistent in the 80’s every morning until last night. Plus it tasted like a burnt meringue. So back to cauliflower crusts. Thank you for your inspiration and your recipes! One gets sick of rotisserie chicken and asparagus. Hope all is well!

I just bought your book and I think it will help me get back into the low carb lifestyle! Thank you so much for your story! I have been fighting this all my life! My A1c levels were running in the 6-6.5 range and on just one month of low carb I came down to 5.3! I just got off track a month ago because I was tired of the meat, cheese and egg routine—your book has inspired me! The recipes look great!

I was wondering if you offered Coaching. I have read so much about Keto and every expert says something different. I have to say I am overwhelmed on what to do and I am starting to get frustrated to the point that I am almost ready to give up. Hello there… I just have a simple question… Is the weight loss suppose to be slow? I’m on week 8 of Keto and have lost 8lbs. I’m not complaining, just wondering since I have about 80’bs to lose. I typed up more detailed information before on this site and haven’t heard anything back, so I decided to come on here to see if it posted and of course it hasn’t, so I must have done something wrong. Please advise, as I’m not losing faith in Keto, just want to make sure, I’m on the right track even with a “LOW” weight loss. Thank you for any advise you have.

Hey there. Weight loss will differ for each person. Sometimes slow and steady isn’t a bad thing. Try not to let the scale be your only way of tracking your progress. How are you feeling, how is your energy level, how are your clothes fitting, etc.

Thank you for your response…I have just tried so many things for so many years, that I second guess myself…My clothes haven’t really been a great indicator as it seems everything is made from spandex these days. I will keep moving forward, just worried that all the “heavy whipping cream” in my coffee is keeping me from being more successful.

Hi Suzanne, had not previously heard of you, but saw your amazing cookbook at Costco and bought it – not only great recipes but a beautiful, well-thought out book and inspiring story! Thank you for sharing in such an authentic and helpful way – I’ve followed ‘wheat belly’ for ~ 5+ years now (more moderate carb but no grains), though find lower carb helpful for weight control and energy, especially as I age (I’m 56). Your cookbook and imagery is truly inspiring. One question – you mention Quest bars as a good road-trip convenience snack, would Costco’s Protein Bars also fit that bill? Ingredient and nutrient label-wise they seem Costco’s lower-priced answer to Quest bars, and to me are just as tasty, if not more. Curious your take on that.

    Great job and thank you!

Hi Suzanne, I feel super lucky that I stumbled onto your website while in the middle of a search for low carb bread options. I have actually been spending the weekend reading many things online, on IG accounts, Pinterest regarding Keto. Since my husband and I decided this sounds like a good fit for us to get our health finally to have energy for our 5 year old boy. I am really looking forward to your website, videos and maybe even the occasional reach out for help! Who knows. It made me feel happy to see you are a local SF gal yourself. While I don’t live directly in SF I’m born and raised Sf Bay Area girl and it inspires me to know someone go from the size I’m at to such great health just right in the same city as me. My next up is to follow your IG and see what this book has to offer us. Tomorrow is our first day- fridge is packed full of Keto stuff- pre packed meals for breakfast and lunch. Here goes nothing huh. New chapter …

Good morning! I read that you have Hashimotos. Did you find that with Keto after initially losing a few pounds.. you stalled for several weeks? I keep reading that it can be common for a stall for several weeks until the body truly starts adjusts. I am several weeks in, and am testing moderate.. way below 20 net carbs a day on average and my weight will not budge. I’m going to keep on- keep on-ing, but just wondered if you had any insight. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your site!! I’ve watched ALL your progress YouTube videos.

I did keto last fall (2017) and stuck with it for 4 months…even making it through Thanksgiving & Christmas. For some reason, I seemed to have fallen off the wagon in mid-January. I kept telling myself I’d get back on keto…never doing it. Luckily, I only saw about a 5 lb. gain since then. I started over…for the LAST time…this past Monday. Hubs is even ‘trying’ to go keto with me.

Just wanted to let you know your honesty, real-life videos…and website…have truly inspired me to go full force with keto. I thank you from the bottom of my heart!!

I just bought your book and was amazed – your story is nearly identical to mine. From school to the gallbladder I felt like I was reading my own history. I started a ND guided “lean, green and clean” keto plan as an attempt to end unexplained pain and inflammation a month ago. I am down 20 lbs. I feel as if I finally found something that will work and a lifestyle I can stick to. I’m not starving or tempted. My in-laws have joined in and my father-in-law who is a self-admitted “carboholic” is persevering; he’s lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks. My husband’s pants are falling down. The only thing I seem to be struggling with is getting the fat in, which is likely why I’ve stalled out this week. I’m exploring MCT oil and eating avocados again.
Thank you for being an inspiration!

    Hi Suzanne

You are such an inspiration. Like you I am tall standing 5’10” and at my heaviest I was 293. I just started Keto about a month ago with a starting weight of 268. I am now down to 252. My sister also just began and as a gift she sent me Simply Keto. The recipes so far have been great. One question though, what happens if I don’t eat all that I should for fat, protein and calories but I stay u der 20 grams of carbs (22 per your calculator). Many days I am just not as hungry as before. I have also noticed that my sciatica pain from a herniated iated L3L4 disc so almost gone (I was close to considering another back surgery) I can hike about 2-3 miles a day with pain and have been getting an average of 9000 steps a day. Is okay to be under macros (not over on carbs) and will that slow down or speed up weight loss? I am also fasting from 8pm until noon and have a keto coffee with MCT oil and butter (with a little cinnamon) in the am. Thank you again for your inspiration and sharing.

Hi Suzanne, I am 51 years old and 5’2″. I am at 227 lbs. I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I like you have done the roller coaster of diets and get tired of seeing all these thin women on the cover of everything telling you how easy it is to lose weight. Your story and your pictures depict how a lot of us feel. I stumbled across your book while researching Keto. Your recipes are sooooo much easier to follow. Some of the foods I don’t like but it’s nice to know that I can find a substitute. I am having difficulty finding unblanched almond flour. You would think living in Vegas I could find it. I can’t even find it online. Is there a substitute for it. Also, what kind of MCT Oil do you recommend? Looking forward to starting this new journey in my life and I’m preparing everything before I start. Thank you so much! You truly are an inspiration.

    Hi Suanne,

Congratulations on the success of your journey! I came across your blog and I am deeply inspired by your weight loss and success. Like you, I have struggled with my weight at a young age and one of my goals as a teen was to lose weight. I managed to lose 70 lbs over the years and kept it off within a 5-7 lb range. However, last year I was diagnosed with SIBO and it completely reeked havoc on my digestive system resulting in a 15 pound weight gain. Today, I am still struggling is spite of all the changes I have had to make in my diet. I am now dairy free and have been gluten free for over 5 years. I am very interested and excited about living the Keto lifestyle. I subscribed to the carbmanager app which is so helpful and makes following Keto quite easy. I love to cook and prepare all my meals. I tried starting Keto over the last few weeks and not sure what I’m doing wrong but am struggling with losing weight. I am not giving up. I have adjusted macros to 75% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs. I’m hoping this will help me go into ketosis. I would be so appreciative to hear any suggestions you have to offer. My current weight is 119 and I just want to get back to where I was 2 years ago. You have inspired me to move forward in my journey and to stay positive! I’m looking forward to this journey!!! You look AMAZING!!! Keep inspiring others! Getting healthy is so important!

I just got your book, and I love it. Simple things that I can usually find at my grocery store here in rural central Washington. WinCo even carries Swerve sweeteners! You are an inspiration. I did ok on a whole 30 diet, but it didn’t work for my Husband (who is not a veggie lover) but keto does and I’m so happy to find a resource like you and your book! Three cheers for simplicity!!!

Hi Suzanne. When I read your introduction, I teared. Because it reminded me of my unsuccessful journey and emotions. I came across your book when I was browsing amazon. I have bought it and going to give this keto diet a try. I want to start feeling good about myself.

    Hi Suzanne
We just attended your Atlanta Beyond Simply Keto Book Tour. What a great opportunity to meet you and others in my community that are on the same journey! My husband and I made a date out of it since we’re doing KETO as a family. We both enjoyed meeting you and it was nice to see how down to earth and welcoming you are – just like your books. While reading your books, my husband appreciated your transparency.

Thank you again for being the catalyst in a much needed change in our lives. We are excited to see the weight come off but more importantly see the change in our mindsets once and for all!

PS You mentioned jeans that you loved…can you remind me please the brand name.
PSS Finally got some sleep from the Restless Legs haha

Just got your book. Problem #1 – I absolutely hate coconut, avocados, and eggs. What is there to eat for breakfast except salad which just does not appeal for breakfast.

Hi Linda, Take a look at the breakfast section on the blog. You may like the Everything Bagels (which are also from Beyond Simply Keto), blueberry muffins, or the sausage ball recipe.

Hello Suzanne. You are such an inspiration to me. I’ve been on and off keto so many times. I have both of your books. I started watching your YouTube videos from the very beginning. I love your strength and determination. Oh and also you don’t use foul language which is a breath of fresh air. That is important to this Grandma.
So I’m on my 4th day. SW 208. Today is 201.6
My goal is 150. Thank you for all you do.

You have worked hard and it shows!!! I tried Keto a year ago with no luck, lost only about 5# 🙁 I also have the Simply Keto book. I really do not have time for the cooking and keeping track of the macros. It depresses me as I see the results many, many have had. So inspirational, yet frustrating 🙁 🙁

I am a newbie to keto. I have been doing this for almost a solid month with no cheating. Found out I was not counting carbs correctly and now am.
I have only been able to be in ketosis for 1 day still no cheating. I am taking supplements that I purchased from Dr Berg faithfull also electrolye powder. I find I have a hard time adding fat to my meals. Will this keep me out of ketosis?
    I need helpp

      Hi Lucille,

I have been doing Keto off and on for 10 months. You need to keep up with the fat. If you don’t get enough then yes, this could keep you out of Ketosis. When I was starting out, I purchased a Keto book that had a meal plan and followed the recipes and portions to a T to get off to the correct start. Find a book that has an actual meal plan to help you start. Get on an app that will help you track your Macros. Always remember, the main part of every meal should be healthy fats. You can always use MCT oil to help you if you are low on fat. =) Good Luck.

I am just considering learning about the keto diet. I need to lose 100 lbs – probably more, but would be more than happy with losing 100. I have had several joints replaced but am still full of arthritis. Just not sure where to start – buy a book?

    Hi Suzanne,

I have watched several of your weigh in videos. Awesome. Over the weeks I saw your progress. I never heard you mention exercise. Where you exercising as well during your weight loss? Or were you just doing the Keto? If you were exercising, what were you doing?

    Hi Suzanne,
Just found your site! I have tried 4 different keto calculators to find my macros and of course I’ve received 4 different answers. I’m 245lbs, 66 yrs old and light activity. What macros should I stick too please?
