Simple DIY Spice Drawer Organization Project

Hey everyone! I think we can all agree that 2020 has been a rough and stressful year. Many of us, including myself, have been trying to find joy in the simple things. One thing that really makes me feel happy and peaceful is having a clean and organized home. This week, I decided to take on a DIY spice drawer organization project. The results were so awesome that I wanted to share it with all of you!

The Before

As many of you know, we just moved to the Atlanta area, after living in the SF Bay Area for 8 wonderful years. I previously had my spices on clear step style organizers in my old house. All of the colors, shapes, and various bottles always made it hard to find the spices I was looking for. I knew this time around that I really wanted to have the spices in alphabetical order for ease of finding what I was looking for. Also, in an effort to use less glass and plastic, I wanted to have refillable jars that all matched. I searched all over and read lots of reviews before deciding. With three simple steps, I had an amazing and organized new spice drawer!

Be sure to measure your drawer, so you know which one will be the best fit. I ended up ordering the large, and then cut it to size. This drawer insert can be cut with a table saw or a small handheld cutting tool. Since we don’t have any power tools yet, I hired someone from Task Rabbit to come and cut it at my house, which was only $23.00!

Spice Jars

Next up was ordering the matching spice jars. These jars have 6 different lid color options, but I decided to go with stainless steel. Each package has 12 jars, and with my drawer size, I was able to hold 48 spices or 4 sets of jars. This set also comes with a funnel to easily transfer your spices into the new containers. What I really loved about these jars is that they aren’t round, which means they will lay flat on the spice organizer without rolling around.  This set also comes with spice labels, but I really wanted modern and clean look, so I’ll share about the labels next!

Labels

If you search online there are TONS of different options for labels. I really wanted a white and black look with clean lines. I decided to order labels from The Dwelling Company on Etsy. There are several options with size and color, but I ordered the white 1.25″x 2.25″ and went with the 80 standard labels for more spice variety (we can’t forget the everything but the bagel label!) Once I placed an order, the labels came in the mail in about a week. I found them very easy to place onto the spice jars, and I tried my best to make sure they were all in a similar location on the jars. These labels are made with a self-adhesive polyester, which means they are waterproof and oil resistant, which was really important to me!

I have to tell you my husband who is not on keto told me to email you. He loves all the recipes from the book I’ve been cooking. I joke he’ll lose 15lbs and I’ll lose mine.

I liked your new spice drawer so much that I ordered them for myself and the same labels. Jars are here and look beautiful. Now just waiting for labels. Thanks for the inspiration.
BTW why did you move to Atlanta?

Great, I hope you love the end result! We moved to be closer to family and for a better cost of living. California is amazing but very expensive to own a home there!

Hi! I’m doing a kitchen and ordering cabinets tomorrow, so figuring out all the final configuration and size logistics.. and would love to do this! How wide is your drawer? I have 50-55 spices so definitely need to do the 48! I will whittle my collection down a few. 🙂
